About Let's Compose!

Who are we?

Let's Compose! is run by Michael Barnathan, a computer science/mathematics student at Monmouth University and founder of HireGeeks.com. Michael plays the piano and composes in his spare time.

Why bother?

Being both a programmer and composer has its advantages: You notice things lacking in one area that exist in the other. Collaborative software development has come a long way, but collaborative composition? I couldn't find a thing! That indicated a new niche to explore.

Not to mention that this may spark a whole new paradigm and result in much better composition. It happened barely twenty years ago in software; it can happen in music as well.

I also want to dust off my C++ programming skills. I haven't been able to do much real programming in at least six months.

Philosophy

Let's Compose! is dedicated to helping composers collaborate and improve both their own skills and music as a whole. We believe that traditional industries have done a poor job of this, even going so far as making sheet music of public domain works difficult to find freely.

We adopt a stance known as “altruware”: If you are desperate enough to pirate our software, you obviously have great motivation to advance music. We won't stop you. All we do is ask that you allow others the same freedom with your own works.

The Name

Like HireGeeks, I tried to choose a catchy and easy to remember name. “Let's Compose!” expresses the purpose and spirit of this site much more concisely than anything I write here can.

The Image

It's a Terragen render I created in 2004. It's titled “Morning's Light”.
