Music Room

Welcome to the Music Room!

Music Room is a freely available repository to store, update, collaborate on, and listen to compositions. It is powered by the popular version control system Subversion.

Subversion requires some technical knowledge to use effectively. Because of this, we provide tools and documentation to help you use Music Room, including a web-based repository manager called Insurrection. Despite this, you will still need to know a bit about version control to use Music Room.

Uploading a file to the repository is called a commit, or check-in. If you specify your repository as public, anyone will be able to commit changes to your repository. Downloading a file is called a check-out, and can be done by anyone in a public repository. Syncing your local copy of the files in the repository with those in the server is called an update.

Music Room is primarily meant for sharing scores (for example, Finale, Sibelius, MusicXML, or MIDI files). We discourage, but do not prohibit, storing recordings, such as files in WAV or MP3 format. If we find you uploading files that are not related to music, infringe upon copyright laws, or are hateful, inappropriate, or illegal, you will be banned from Music Room and, if applicable, prosecuted. If you upload these sorts of files to someone else's repository, be aware that anyone can easily roll back your changes and that enough information about you is stored to identify you. We don't take kindly to people who vandalize others' repositories. Don't do it.

By initially uploading a piece of music to Music Room, you agree that you hold the copyright (or are an authorized representative of the copyright holder) to the piece. This is because you need to grant a license for other people to collaborate on the piece with you.

Two choices

There are two editions of Music Room: Free and Professional. The free edition is (you guessed it) free to use, but you are limited to 5 MB and cannot use the compositions commercially. By initially uploading a piece of music to a free repository, you agree to license the piece under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial Share-Alike license.

By contrast, the Professional Edition of Music Room costs $5/month. However, you get 100 MB of space (additional space may be purchased separately). You may also license the content you upload under any license you choose, provided that the license does not conflict with your settings (for example, if you make your repository publicly editable, you are granting other people the right to create derivative works; this supersedes any terms in the license you choose) and provides for attribution of all authors that collaborated on your piece. You can use these pieces commercially, but all those who made meaningful contributions to the piece (i.e. not vandals) should receive a portion of any royalties. We leave the licensing terms up to you. If you miss a payment, we reserve the right to deactivate your repository.
